Any kid who’s ever waked up on a glittering morning, to find that a blizzard has transformed the neighborhood,
knows the thrill of a snow day.
And any kid who lives where it doesn’t snow deserves to find out how much fun a bonus day off from school in the winter can be!

So…join Jo and her friends as they pack the day with outdoor fun! Espy her thoughtful moments,
pondering the beauty of the morning, her chicken noodle soup at lunchtime,
and the snowlight as she falls asleep at the end of a perfect day.

And there’s another bonus tucked into the book: two dozen poem forms
that will slip like Jo on an icy sidewalk into the minds of young readers and of little kids being read to.
Most people know that babies learn to understand the spoken word through repetition of sounds.
And that the musicality of nursery rhymes helps toddlers to remember them, when read to.
I think older kids can enjoy more complex poetic forms as long as there’s a good children’s story in the meter and rhyme.
So, I decided to indulge my love of winter and classic forms, and write a tale which is carried along from poem to poem.

So, I decided to indulge my love of winter and classic forms, and write a tale which is carried along from poem to poem.
My goal was to create a storybook that could be read to young children
(and enjoyed by the adults reading it to them), as well as being a good Easy Reader for older kids.
I wanted it to be funny, because who doesn't love funny?
And I also did my best to capture some moments and feelings about a snowstorm's sheer beauty,
which I remember from when I was little myself, and from snow days with my daughter.

Also, there’s a Snow Dragon named Zephyryll,
a dog called Dust Mop who dreams he’s ThunderSnow, lead sled dog of TV and movie fame,
and Jo’s two best friends, Violet and Suzi.
Oops! We can’t forget that Mom and Dad and baby brother, Sam, are part of the action.

I chose 24 different, classic forms of poetry.
There’s an index and guide to each poem form, with meter and rhyme and themes spelled out, following the story.
Some are simple enough that kids will be able to try writing them, right away.
More complex forms will introduce the concept of writing poetry as a brain game. And stick with kids.
As they get older, they'll have the idea firmly in their heads that poetry speaks to everybody,
and doesn’t have to be about love (ick!), or boring wandering clouds or silly flowers.
You don’t even need a quill pen to write it!
